Amidst the never ending politicization of the attack on Flight 253 on Christmas Day, Rachel Maddow has provided some extremely sobering context to the political grenades currently being lobbed over the White House gate.
In response to Dick Cheney's recent statement that Obama was faltering by allowing Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to obtain counsel and be tried in American courts:
"The Bush justice department let [the shoe bomber], as they say, 'lawyer up' and Mr. Reid later plead guilty in a Federal Court. Remember 9/11 co-conspirator Zacharias Mousawi? Same deal. Given American rights, tried in Federal courts and convicted...
What President Obama is doing in this case is the same thing that was done in the same type of cases while Dick Cheney was Vice President."
With regard to the unanimous criticism that Obama waited too long by delaying comment on the issue for 72-hours:
"For the record, after the Richard Reid shoe-bombing incident in 2001, President Bush was not seen or heard from in six days...Like President Obama, Mr. Bush was on vacation at the time of that incident and did not see fit to comment until almost a full week after it happened."
Lastly, regarding laying blame on Obama for incident itself:
"The Bush-Cheney Administration created the terror watch list system that should have theoretically caught the 'Christmas Bomber' this past Friday. As has been noted, this is a list that has over five-hundred-thousand names on it... it hasn't changed since then- maybe the problem is that we haven't cleaned up after the Bush-Cheney Administration fast enough."
Republicans are blatantly proselytizing politics and fear on the American people to help bolster votes and campaign contributions for their party. Let us remember, however, that Democrats were hardly short of political low-blows during the Bush Administration, be them deserved or not. The seizing of the slightest misstep by the opposition party in a never ending coup for votes and money is nauseating and tearing this country apart at the seams. Apparently they are more interested in stupefying us into blind allegiance or apathy then they are actually representing us.
